You often hear that payday loans are something people turn to when there’s an emergency expense like a car accident or medical emergency. That’s not necessarily true. In a study on payday loans, the Pew Charitable Trust found that 69 percent are used to pay for recurring expenses like utilities, food or other bills. The average borrower uses eight loans a year, which last about 18 days each.

RISE has tools for monitoring credit. When you apply for a loan, you can sign up for Credit Score Plus, which gives you access to your TransUnion credit score and monthly updates on that score. You also get alerts and notifications about activity that affects your credit score. If you’re investigating payday loans and alternatives because of insufficient credit, this is a useful tool that can help you build your credit. When your credit improves, you can get loans from institutions that don’t charge exorbitant rates.
If you find yourself in a situation where you're considering a payday loan, explore alternatives first. If you have emergency expenses, consider using a credit card or finding a cosigner for a personal loan. These have lower interest rates and don’t put you in as much of a bind as payday loans. The balloon payment when the term of your payday loan expires can leave you short when your next paycheck arrives, which can force you into taking out another to pay for your expenses. In cases like this, making minimum payments on a credit card, while not ideal, is a better option than being caught in a payday loan debt trap.
At that point I really had no other option other than a payday loan with no guarantor, but it worked out very well for my son and me overall. I was a little hesitant to apply for one of these fast loans because I had heard bad things about them before, but I didn’t experience any issues whatsoever. I was approved for the emergency loan the same day I applied, so I didn’t have to wait a long time at all. The funds were quickly transferred into my bank so I could get the medication my son needed before he showed any signs of distress.
A car title loan is similar to a faxless loan, except must put up collateral which in this case is your vehicle. A title loan is still a legitimate short-term loan which is typically repaid within 30 days. The advantage of a title loan is you can borrow more than a bad credit loan if your vehicle is worth enough money. The disadvantage of a title loan is you could lose your car if you do not repay the loan.
Consumer Notice: Cash advances are short-term loans, and can typically range from $100 to $999. They are intended for short-term financial relief and do not constitute long-term financial solutions. For example, they can generally be intended to be repaid within a year. Consumers facing debt and credit difficulties should seek out debt and credit advisory help. Federal and state laws cover certain types of lenders and loans, including short-term loans. If a lender is wholly owned and operated by a federally recognized American Indian Tribe and sovereign government, applicable Tribal and Federal law governs its loans and related contracts, requests and documents. Tribal lenders’ rates and fees may be higher than state-licensed lenders, and are subject to federal and tribal laws, not state laws. Consumers are encouraged to research laws that may be applicable to short-term loans, and to ask their lenders for more information.
