call from Niagra Capital Services Inc. About a loan from 2010 when I lived in New Jersey. He said he has a legal complaint about me. He has my new phone number, where I used to work as well as my new address in a different state. He said with interest I owe about $ 1,500, but will settle for $ 560. I asked him to email me the info, (since he has my email address) I have taken the name of the payday loan company that I took out the loan with. I remember that I paid hundreds of over what I borrowed. I emailed him back and asked for the original paperwork associated with the loan. I did some research and found that payday loans are illegal in the state of New Jersey. It’s been over 4 years. What can I do?
No need to panic. Debt collectors do not pick people up at home or work because they can not pay their bills. Ask them to send you a written notice of the debt that is required under federal law. (By mail, not email.) If they say they can not, then you’re dealing with a scammer. If so, then read my article 7 Ways to Stop Overseas Debt Collection Scam Calls and turn the tables on them!

So, the payday business model is not like pawn shop, where you surrender your valuable possessions to raise cash. To get a payday loan, you need to have a job and a bank account. According to Pew survey data, some 12 million Americans – roughly 1 in 20 adults – take out a payday loan in a given year. They tend to be relatively young and earn less than $ 40,000; they tend to not have a four-year college degree; and while the most common borrower is a white female, the rate of borrowing is the highest among the minorities.
, blah, blah blah. Some people have been middle east, but some are not. I tried to leave a message to call me back but no answer. I went on the net tonight, and have been enlightened. I have to cancel my checking acct. because I gave them my info. I feel so gullable. Just because I gave them auth. for auto withdrawl. Don, do it, please just deal with the companies you took out the loan with !!!
I gotten calls from PDLR- IT’S A SCAM! Beware for Miss Berry, Miss Santiago, or Miss Stiles, who all claim to be supervisors! The said my salary is going to be garnished in 2 days, we had a very heated exchange in which Miss Berry started talking about my mother, lol. Then when I insisted on the proof of the debt, how much, and who they are, they told me that I would get an email after the 1st payment is made. Initially I thought it was a legitimate debt & gave my credit card info, but after googling this agency I’ve found it a scam. Called my bank & reported it immediately.
DEYOUNG: I had written that paper, and had I know 100 percent of the facts about where the data came from and who paid for it – yes, I would have disclosed that. I do not think it’s one way or the other in terms of what the research found and what the paper says.
Alternative Financial Services: Innovating to Meet Customer Needs in an Evolving Regulatory Framework, by John Hecht, Research Analyst, Stephens Inc. (now at Jefferies & Company Inc.) (February, 2014).
Fulmer’s firm, Advance America, runs about 2,400 payday loan shops, across 29 states. All in, there are roughly 20,000 payday shops in the U.S., with total loan estimated at around $ 40 billion per year. If you were back to the early 1990s, there were fewer than 500 payday-loan stores. But the industry grew as many states relaxed their usury laws – many states, but not all. Payday lending is prohibited in 14 states, including much of the north and in Washington, D.C. Another nine states allow payday loans but only with more borrower-friendly terms. And that leaves 27 states where payday lenders can charge in the neighborhood of 400 percent interest – states ranging from California to Texas to Wisconsin to Alabama, which is what drew President Obama there.
the eyes of the company i owe it to? Not to mention, if I really did have these debts – where are they on my credit report? So I asked that ALL communications from their company, and the “server” Alex be stopped – they are not to contact me at my place of employment, nor any of my family that have been contacted. So frustrating to know that this company is able to do this.
1. I am a regular or resident member of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard, which does not specify a period of 30 days or less of a member of the Armed Forces on active duty. I had something similiar happen to me today. They called my uncle cell phone and left him a message. They guy said his name was London Dupree from a check check investigation unit and said a case number. (334) 578-0706. I called them back and when I started asking for what was from he said that he needed to give me to a supervisor. The woman I was very rude and her name was Jennifer Wright. She said I had a payday loan from 2008 that was online and it was defaulted because my bank account did not cover it. She said that if I do not make a payment of $ 1904.72 that I would be up for 4 felony’s and that I would be arrested in 48 hours. I told the woman that I was never notified of this and that I need her to send me paperwork stating this. She said unfortunatly she could not do this because the paperwork is to be used against me and that I can only see it when it is presented to court. I told her I did not have the money. Help !!! Is this a scam …
DEYOUNG: Studies that have looked at this have found that once you control for the demographics and income levels in these areas and these communities, the racial characteristics no longer drive the location decisions. As you can expect, business people do not care what color their customers are, as long as their money’s green.
I just got a call from a friend friend stating someone called me from an arbitration placeor something. She gave me the name and name of the person. Apparently they told my friend that I had to contact them before the end of business tomorrow or they are going to suspend my license and have money garnished from my checks. One big problem is a drive for a company so without my license I would not be working. This is threatening my job life and family. They were really rude. I did call the number and I left a message for them to call me back. I suspect this is a scam because I got married a little over a year ago. And they have my social security number and my name name and they called my friend. I suspect it is a scare tactic from a loan called security finance. But I did not hear from them since a month before I got married. I’m looking into this before I give them any info at all
DEYOUNG: Oh, I think that our history of usury laws is a direct result of our Judeo-Christian background. And even Islamic banking, which follows in the same tradition. But clearly interest on lent or borrowed money has, has been looked at non-objectively, let’s put it that way. So the shocking APR numbers if we apply them to rent a hotel or rent a car or lend your father’s gold watch or your mother’s silverware to the pawnbroker for a month, the APRs come out similar. So the shock from these numbers is, we recognize the shock here because we are used to calculate interest rates on loans but not interest rates on anything else. And it’s human nature to want to hear bad news and it’s, you know, the media understands this and so they report bad news more often than good news. We do not hear this. It’s like the houses that do not burn down and the stores that do not get robbed.
I did take a payday loan years ago but was paid off and no issues and not with the companies listed. The three are just not mine. Went to the bank asked transactions from
I got a call today from some lady named ms jones nichole
Christy – Do not panic. It sounds like you’re talking with a scammer. Please read this article. Do not send them a prepaid card. If it was a legitimate collection agency they would allow you to send a check. They want a prepaid card because it can not be traced. And once you pay them something, they will never leave you alone. Cash Advance® does not make credit decisions nor does Cash Advance® conduct a credit inquiry on consumers. Some lenders on the Cash Advance® network may conduct a non-traditional credit check in order to determine your eligibility for a loan. Lenders typically do not conduct a credit inquiry with the three major credit bureaus: Transunion, Experian, or Equifax. If you do not repay your loan on time your lender may report this delinquency to one or more credit bureaus, which may have a negative impact on your credit score. We encourage consumers with credit problems to consult a Credit Counseling company.
… and remember … do not sign anything at your doorstep …
this is happening to me they made me buy 2 green dot cards for $ 425 i keep calling them back and they are not answering the phone. I am only 21 years of age I do not know what to do or how to get my money back. Can someone help?
Jason – It absolutely sounds like the classic overseas payday loan scam. Do not send them a penny. Remember, in the US a debt collector is required to send notification of the debt to you in writing. If he does not, he’s breaking the law. Report these guys to the FTC and your state attorney general.
There is a long and often twisted history of industries co-opting scientists and other academic researchers to produce findings that make their industries look safe or more reliable or otherwise better than they really are. Whenever we talk about academic research on this show – which is pretty much every week – we try to show the provenance of that research and establish how legitimate it is. The best first step in figuring that out is to ask what kind of incentives are at play. But that is only one step.
Sorry to hear a scammer made your day so difficult, but we are relieved to do not send a moneygram. Those, along with prepaid cards, are popular ways for scammers to take advantage of scared consumers. But good for you for doing the research and figuring out it was a scam.
Turn the tables on them. You can report them to the FTC.gov. Give the FTC as many details as you can. If you have applied for a payday loan online in the past, you may need to include the name of that site in your complaint because your information was either sold or compromised and the FTC needs to know where these guys are getting personal information. That information will go into a database that is shared by law enforcement and other governmental agencies.
has been slammed with an unexpected bill and no cash on hand to cover it. If you ignore the expense, things may only get worse. But your next paycheck is still a long way away.
To repay the loan, you will usually have a post-dated check for the full balance, including the fee, or you provide the lender with the authorization to electronically debit the funds from your bank, credit union or prepaid card account. If you do not repay the loan on or before the due date, the lender can cash the check or electronically withdraw money from your account.
It may not even surprise you to learn that the Center for Responsible Lending – the non-profit that’s fighting predatory lending – that it was founded by a self-help Credit Union, which would likely stand to benefit from the elimination of payday loans. And that among the Center’s many funders are banks and other mainstream financial institutions.
the time frame and closed the account. Even the gentleman of the bank said it is a fishy because Payday loans are auto withdrawls and if it’s in person and the person does not pay the collateral account is charged. The only way to pay is to close the account.
told him he had been reported to the authorities and they were investigating. He yelled at me and said something to the effective having his “balls to my throat and how did I like that” then hung up. I have heard and more. I’m terrified to go to work. The numbers are a NJ number starting with a 973 area code and the company number starts with 646 (NY). Beware!
was surprised that I was not served. The guy said if I got served he could not help me. He said I wrote the check in 2007 and the client wants to take me to court for $ 5408 which is 4 years of interest. I think it’s a scam. I do not remember the name of the company. Is this most likely a scam? He only asked for my last 4 numbers of my Social security number ..
For spring cleaning this year, President Trump is looking at his Cabinet. The Associated Press reported Monday that Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin is near to be removed. When Trump fired H.R. McMaster as a national-security adviser, that torpedoed a plan to dismiss McMaster, Shulkin, and Ben Carson, the secretary of housing and urban development, at once, according to Politico
sure now it was a scam.
Tiffany – Phone numbers can be easily faked. And “a little convincing” is not good enough. What you need to know is whether they are a legitimate collection agency and you actually owe the debt. The first step is always to ask them to MAIL you information about the debt. That’s required by law. If they do not, then refuse to talk with them until they do. Do not accept email or anything less.
